My teacher called it a presentation stage. She used a cardboard box and cut a slit in the top and an open face in the front. In the slit she hung a string across the top so that she can clip papers in it. The stage frees the kids' hands up in order for them to hold notes or to point to the paper as they speak. No more awkward holding of the paper and trying to present! Here's what it looks like.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10769011302643843472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2702446763866205682.post-62922303326262856132015-06-05T08:53:00.000-07:002015-06-05T08:53:03.802-07:0021st Century Classrooms vs 20th Century ClassroomsI know there is much debate over Common Core. I'm not here to discuss the details behind CCSS and the politics. All I know is that our world is not the same as it was when I went to school. As a matter of fact, it is rapidly changing daily. Are our students prepared for these changes? Are our classrooms preparing students to be successful in the 21st century? What are the 21st Century skills that our students need to be successful today? As I am going through the lessons I keep thinking about how great the resources are that they are sharing with us. I want to share those resources with you as well. The first one is a link to a online classroom management profile. There are four types of managers: authoritarian, authoritative, laissez-faire, and indifferent. I am a authoritative manager. What type are you? After you take the quiz, comment below with your classroom management profile. Look for more classroom management ideas and resources to come.
She always had some cute saying to go along with it. I decided to make some for my teachers each month as well. I should have blogged about it sooner but since this is my first year of being a principal. I've been a bit busy. So here is what I have done so far:

August (First Day of School): A highlighter with this note

These could easily be adapted for students without giving them candy of course. (We do not give candy in our state.) I will make them a freebie soon so be on the lookout!

At first I thought it is way to late to start a game tonight, but then I changed my mind. She pulled out a baggie with a set of index cards. Each card had a math fact on it that my daughter was going to have a test on. Also in the stack were cards labeled BANG! The game was to put all the cards face up in a pile on the table. On our turn, we had to say the answer to the fact on the top card. If we answered correctly, we kept the card. If we answered incorrectly, we put the card on the bottom of the pile. If the card up on our turn was a BANG card we had to put all of our collected cards back in the pile and start over collecting cards. I thought this was a great idea of a game!! It has so many possibilities. I created a Superhero version of this game. Instead of BANG cards, there are WHAM and POW cards. The instructions work the same though. I also thought this game could be used to practice any skill the child needed to work on. Every child's game would be set up for his/her skill needs. Included in this freebie is the set of WHAM and POW cards as well as one sheet of blank cards that can be copied for use as needed. Thank you Mrs. Carey for the great inspiration! (As usual!) Click on the first picture to grab your freebie!
This site is from a school district in Utah. I had some concerns about one or two of the terms used on the third grade list because I couldn't find them in the standards documents. The elementary math coordinator from their district told me that the majority of the words are common core. Actually, she believes they all are, but some did come from their math series Houghton Mifflin Go Math. Honestly though, the site was great. Here is the link. While looking through that site, I stumbled across a blog titled Tools for the Common Core State Standards. It's author is Bill McCallum. He wrote the article The Structure is the Standards. This article is a must read for Common Core. So much great information, so little time! Okay, now the reason I started this post in the first place. On that same vocabulary search I found a site from the University of Arizona that published some draft papers that describe the progression of the mathematics through each of the strands. The papers are labeled by grade level are very easy to read. What I loved most about the papers though is the one or two paragraphs at the end of each one that explains how the math at the lower grades is setting the foundation for the math in the grades beyond. It is very specific too. Want to know why it's important to compose and decompose shapes? Read the Geometry paper. Want to know why it's important to know algebra at the lower grades? Read the K-5 Operations and Algebraic Thinking page. Here is an example excerpt from the geometry:

Where the Geometry Progression is Heading

Composition and decomposition of shapes is used throughout geometry from Grade 6 to high school and beyond. Compositions and decompositions of regions continues to be important for solving a wide variety of area problems, including justifications of formulas and solving real world problems that involve complex shapes. Decompositions are often indicated in geometric diagrams by an auxiliary line, and using the strategy of drawing an auxiliary line to solve a problem are part of looking for and making use of structure
(MP7). Recognizing the significance of an existing line in a figure is also part of looking for and making use of structure. This may involve identifying the length of an associated line segment, which in turn may rely on students’ abilities to identify relationships of line segments and angles in the figure. These abilities become more sophisticated as students gain more experience in geometry. In Grade 7, this experience includes making scale drawings of geometric figures and solving problems involving angle measure, surface area,
and volume (which builds on understandings described in the Geometric Measurement Progression as well as the ability to compose and decompose figures) 6/23/2012, comment at commoncoretools.wordpress.com.
Just for those teachers who sometimes ask, "Why do I need to teach this?" These papers answer the question.
I laughed so hard watching this video during our opening staff meeting this morning. As I listened to my executive director talk about the hidden meaning of the video as it pertained to us and education I drew my own comparison to common core and the changes we face. I love the common core shifts and I believe for some it will be like this broken escalator. We are used to one way of doing things. We were taught one way and so we teach that way and when we are stuck we are now faced with the decision of moving on our own despite the challenge or remain where we are and go nowhere. It also made me think of how we teach certain subjects--math in particular. Many teachers resist the idea of giving kids the opportunity to use multiple strategies. There is a fixation with the standard algorithm. Amazingly enough, there are other ways to solve problems. Just like in this video, we need to know more than one way out of a situation. We need to know how to solve problems on our own and how to collaborate with others as well. When we learn how to solve a problem using only one method, we don't learn the skills necessary to make application to other situations and solve more complex problems. That's my thought for the day. I felt the need to share. I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions.
CrayfishOh where oh where has my little "crayfish" gone??? Ok this is my 9th year in third grade and this has been the craziest crayfish year yet! First of all, I've had almost all of my crayfish survive. That in and of itself is a miracle. I usually start with about 15 and because of survival of the fittest I end up with about 8 left. This year I had 12 left. Normally, I have kids knocking down my door to get one at the end to take home. This year, I only had a handful. I had no choice but to let my daughter take some home too. She's in my class this year and has spent many a years hearing me tell her that she couldn't have one because they are for my students. So, we took two home. One, which we have name Clawless, (no wondering about that one) is safe at our house in a little container. The other one which definitely has claws is at my house but the word safe probably would not describe it. Yes, overnight, the little thing somehow got out of the container we had it in and is now somewhere in my home. We didn't make this discovery until about 5 minutes before we had to leave for school this morning. My wonderful husband is now at home looking high and low (mostly low) for "Maddie". The story doesn't end there though. When I finally made it to school, my very innocent custodian informed me that he found my crayfish. I thought he was teasing me, but I came to find out that one of the ones left in my classroom awaiting a ride to another home got out and was down the hallway under a bench outside the first grade classroom door. (Much to his surprise at 6am this morning!) Craziness is the only word that comes to mind! LOL!!
Usually, I grow bush beans hydroponically because that is what the science kit calls for, but this year, my bush beans weren't germinating so hot! I decided to try all of the seeds that we germinate in our minisprouters to see if they could be grown hydroponically as well. I must say.....they can be! We have growing in our tanks bush beans, peas, corn, and sunflowers. I know I'm nuts, but I absolutely get a huge thrill out of watching plants grow day to day. Below you'll see photos of our plants from May 23 and then again from May 28. AMAZING! Also, if you closely you'll see tadpoles swimming around in the bottom of the bush bean and sunflower tanks. One of my students brought them in to show the class so we decided to add them in to our science lessons. Why not! It's all about life cycles anyways. LOL
At the end of the year last year, I gave my students a cute treat! It was a bottle of water, a Kool-Aid Single serve packet, and a silly straw. I also sent them to my daughter's class as well. The kids loved them. This was an idea I adapted from a Pinterest post. Here are what my summer treats looked like:
The single serve packets are actually meant for a 16 oz bottle of water so next time I will use the 16 oz bottles. Click on the pictures above if you would like to download it free.
To get the kids pumped up and ready we had a pep rally for them last Friday. We only have two third grades and two fourth grades this year so we were able to have some real fun! All of our 3rd and 4th grade classes were assigned a color to represent their "team". Each class from K-2 was then assigned one of our rooms to be part of our team for the pep rally. Each team designed pennants that we hung up along our hallways and each third/fourth grade teacher made a sign for their team. Our signs reflected our theme for the pep rally. My theme was that we are going to light up the test! We entered the gymnasium one at a time running through streamers to Katy Perry's Firework song. Other songs heard were Eye of the Tiger, and We will Rock YOU. Here's my sign:

I made for this week Test Incentives to pass out each day of the test. I found the idea on Pinterest but I didn't want to use construction paper. I decided just make them using the computer. Click on the first picture below if you would like your own copy of them. I was so excited to find on my desk when I came in this morning something similar from my second grade team. The second grade teacher left a bag of candy for each day of the test with the following:

You were "Mint" to succeed---starlight mints

"CHEW" up the test---chewing gum

You are BURSTING with Knowledge--starbursts

Don't be an AIRHEAD show what you know--Air head taffy

Check out my new classroom pets! Actually, they are part of our science kit curriculum from FOSS Structures of Living Things. They are huge this time! My students are loving them though. Actually, they may be loving them too much. Every time I turn around the kids are back at the tanks checking them out. I'll post pictures again soon. Right now we have 15. I hope we have 15 still alive in the morning!!
Why this is such a difficult concept for children I'll never know. Every year when we analyze our previous year's scores, our students always seem to be low in analyze a geometric or numeric pattern. Hopefully the lessons we've gone over these past few days will have cleared up any misconceptions my students may have had. My teaching partner and I were discussing today how we never really understood patterning when we were children. We just don't remember being taught how to find the pattern. I definitely hated questions that asked me to find the a certain number of shapes in the pattern ie., find the seventh shape if the pattern continues. Hated that! I never understood the concept of the unit. Students must find the unit, or repeating sequence, in order to determine what shape comes next. Eventually I think I figured that much out, but until now I didn't realize there was a number pattern that would help me. Our problem we worked on today was from Pearson's Investigations Unit 6. It was titled Find the Greens. We were given a cube train consisting of red, blue, green, red, blue, green, red, blue, green, up to 12 cubes. The goal was for students to realize that we can find the number of any green cube by skip counting by three's since the green cube was in the last position. We made an input/output table to check our work. By figuring out what number each green cube fell on, we can now figure out the number of any of the other cubes in our basic unit sequence. For example, I know that the 4th green in my pattern is the twelfth cube in my train. I can now figure out the 4th blue also because it is just one less than the 4th green. This will work for any number in the pattern. What would the 20th cube in the pattern be? I know that the 7th green is the 21st cube so the 20th cube will be blue. If students make a table listing all of the greens they can then add in what each blue and red should be. This lesson is great for hitting a large majority of the mathematical practice standards.
We limited our students to only four colors and told them the same color could not touch itself.
This is an activity I created to help my students focus on improving Word Choice in their writing. I tried to look for words that students use often in their writing like good, little, fun, and so on. This activity focuses on helping students find dazzling words to replace them. Click here to download this sample activity. Be sure to check out the full version as well which also includes verbs and adverbs.

Adding details to sentencesI was teaching my students yesterday about adding details to their sentences. I introduced to them triangle sentences. Start with a noun. Then add a strong verb. Then add an adjective, an adverb, and a prepositional phrase. My students asked me if I would make a foldable for them to help them remember what to add to their sentences. One of my students suggested that I come up with pictures to help them remember. So.....I decided to use colored stars of different sizes to remind them to use adjectives. I then used a heart with muscles to remind them to use strong verbs. To remind them to use adverbs I used a turtle and a rabbit. I explained that turtles run the race slowly and rabbits run the race quickly. Last but not least, I used a table to remind them to use prepositional phrases. You can be on the table, off the table, go around the table, etc. I hope you enjoy this freebie. Let me know what you think. A friend if mine suggested I put a folder on the front of the desk of one of my special needs students. I realized all my students would benefit from this idea. I found file folders that are more like pockets. I let the kids decorate them and then I taped it to the front of each desk. Now their names are visible from the front and they have a place to store morning Noel and unfinished work. You have to watch the kids though. They'll put everything in them including books if you aren't diligent and insistent on what's allowed and not allowed in the pockets.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10769011302643843472noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2702446763866205682.post-4159176470061739452013-03-04T08:59:00.002-08:002013-03-04T08:59:43.651-08:00Classroom Management: Tally Charts for the deskI don't know about you all but my kids have lost a little bit of their memories. They have forgotten the rules of the classroom. I have to admit that I too have lost my memory as well. I have forgotten to reinforce the rules as I know I should. Positive reinforcement had gone right out the door after Christmas. It was all business, but I absolutely know that if the kids are not following the rules less time is getting spent on teaching and more time is spent on disciplining. At the beginning of the year, I placed a laminated small square paper on each desk. I call the paper their tally chart. When students are following the rules, I tell them to give themselves a tally. When students earn 5 tallies, they are rewarded by moving up on my behavior chart. If a student doesn't follow the rules, they lose a tally. If that means they no longer have 5 tallies, they move their clip back down the chart. I used to believe in not taking away from students like this, but it has worked so far. Below is a picture of my chart .
It is a book that is no longer in print but I have used the trick for the 9's facts from it for years. "Grandma" drew a picture called the Nines River. I can't remember exactly how her picture looked, so my students and I made up our own picture this year. My daughter, who is in my class, made up a rhyme to help remember the numbers on the picture. The digits in a product of a x9 fact always add up to 9. For example, 9x4=36, so 3+6=9. 8x9=72, so 7+2=9. These numbers are partners on the nines river. 9x7=63 and 9x4=36 so 3 and 6 are partners.

Here is a picture of the river:

The rhyme from Grandma goes like this:
Take one away from the number with 9
Write that number down.
What's it's partner on the nines river?
Now your answer is found.

For example, 9 x 4 =
Take one away from 4. (3)
Write that number down.
What's it's partner on the nines river? (6)
Now your answer is found.

To remember the partners, my daughter made up this rhyme.
0 and 9 are the sun that shines.
8 and 1 are the anchor that hung.
7 and 2 are a scurvy crew.
6 and 3 are the waves of the sea.
4 and 5 keep the crew alive.

Zero is the sun and 9 is the clouds. 8 and 1 are an anchor. 7 and 2 are crew members. 4 and 5 are the sail. 6 and 3 are waves in the river.

My students love this rhyme and this picture. I usually draw the picture by hand and have the students do the same thing, but my drawing looks awful so I made this one on the computer. I also have my students write the facts out and we discover the fact that the partners total up to 9 together. We practice finding the answers using the rhyme too. Let me know what you all think of this! I wish I could get a hold of Grandma's book. I'm sure it is full of other great ideas too!
It is my personal opinion that organization is the most important part of the process for elementary students. (Again, my opinion.) I created an organizer for my students to use as they practice that helps them keep their ideas organized and focused. I made the organizer from years and years of trial and error. It is a mix of several different writing methods I've used over the years. For descriptive and expository writing, I believe students must have 3 strong main ideas and strong supporting details. Below you'll find a freebie of my organizer as well as a link to my writing trait checklist freebie. Now when I say writing traits I am not referring to the 6 + 1 traits for writing. My state has a rubric that is based off of the 6 + 1 traits for writing but they name them a bit differently. My checklist is based on my state's rubric.

I expect my students to include a beginning, middle, and an end to their stories. The beginning should include a hook (a sentence to grab the reader's attention), the topic sentence, and then answer the 5 w's (who, what, when, where, and why). The beginning should then end with a feeling sentence about the topic.

The middle is for supporting the topic sentence with main ideas and supporting details. Each main idea should be written into a main idea sentence beginning with a transition word. Then students need three good supporting details for each main idea. If students are having trouble with their supporting details, encourage them to think about the 5 w's again. They make great supporting details. I then teach the students to give examples of each supporting details. (I learned this from Four Square Writing.) After students give an example of the detail, they can then elaborate on the example. Judy Gould does a great job of explaining this and giving examples of how this works in her book Writing Workouts that Work.

Since students are writing three main ideas, the middle of their stories becomes three distinct paragraphs.

The final paragraph of course begins with a transition word and then restating the topic sentence. I then have my students either state the main ideas again or give an interesting idea about the topic. The ending should then leave the reader thinking. In my Super Writing Pack I put together, I made a poster of different types of endings students could use in their writing. You can visit that post here. The students and I read together the book The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns shortly after our activity and my students began to wonder about creating a circle. If you aren't familiar with The Greedy Triangle, this book is about a triangle who decides he doesn't like being a triangle anymore. He goes to see the shapeshifter who keeps giving him one more side and one more angle until he can barely walk since he is almost round. He finally decides that being a triangle isn't so bad afterall. It is a great story that the kids LOVE! Some of my students began putting their lines they made (see the first post again) together to create different shapes. I am almost ashamed to admit it but I've never thought to do this before during this activity. I was elated. Here are the shapes we made:
